In recent times, Ghanaians have been encouraged to patronise locally manufactured products particularly, african prints which are mostly referred to as 'African wear'. Today, many people patronise 'batakali' which was previously worn by indigens of the three northern regions.
A lot of people wear batakali over shirts to attend formal functions. Many people in very high positions have resorted to wearing batakali over their shirts to attend very formal functions.Former President J.J Rawlings was seen during his tenure as President of Ghana dressed this way which encouraged a lot of people also in government to follow suite.
This situation has brought Ghanaians together since many people have realised the need to wear indigenous attires belonging to a particular ethnic group. The wearing of batakali today is not symbolic of ethnicity because people from diverse ethnic origin also patronise it, thereby promoting peaceful co-existence among us as Ghanaians.
A lot of batakali manufacturing firms are doing tremendously well in business due to the high patronage by both Ghanaians and foreign nationals, a situation that has contributed significantly to economic situation of Ghana.
